Two Opener Lines, One Company Behind Them

The opener is the part of the door you touch every day, and the part you notice the moment it stops. Rivett supplies, installs and services both of the residential lines we stand behind: LiftMaster® and Guardian®. Our own technicians do the work, so one company is behind the opener, the door it moves and the phone call when something needs adjusting.

Wall mount, belt drive or chain drive. Smart control built in, or a port to add it later. Tell us the door you have, the headroom above it and what sits over the garage, and we will match you to the right opener instead of the one that happens to be on the truck.

  • Seamless connectivity LiftMaster Wi-Fi models work with the myQ® app
  • Smart control when you want it Guardian is Wi-Fi ready with the beam® Smart Controller

Openers Installed and Looked After by Rivett.

LiftMaster and Guardian build the openers. We make sure you end up with the right one: sized to the weight and height of your door, mounted and set properly, and backed by parts and technicians from one company rather than three.

A quiet belt drive for the garage under the bedroom. A chain drive for the workshop out back. A wall mount to reclaim the ceiling for a car lift or storage. Come and hear the difference for yourself at the Whitby showroom, or tell us over the phone what you are working with and we will narrow it down.

What Is the Difference Between
Chain, Belt and Direct Drive?

Three ways to move the same door. Which one suits you usually comes down
to what sits above the garage and how much ceiling you can spare.

Chain Drive

A steel chain pulls the door along the rail. It is the hard-wearing, best-value option and it handles weight without complaint. A sound choice for a detached garage, a workshop or anywhere a little noise does not matter.

Belt Drive

A reinforced belt replaces the chain, so the door runs noticeably quieter with less vibration through the ceiling. This is the one to pick when the garage is attached and there is a bedroom or living space above it.

Direct Drive

The motor itself travels along a fixed chain inside the rail, so there is no chain or belt being pulled back and forth overhead. Very few moving parts, very little vibration and among the quietest openers made. The choice when noise is the deciding factor and the ceiling is free.

Why Buy Your Opener From Rivett

LiftMaster and Guardian build the openers. What you live with is who sized it,
who installed it, and who picks up the phone when it stops.

Two Lines, One Recommendation

We carry LiftMaster and Guardian, so the advice you get is based on your door and your garage rather than on the only brand in the van.

Smart Control, Now or Later

Open, close and check the door from your phone with myQ® on LiftMaster Wi-Fi models, or add it to a Guardian later through the beam® Smart Port.

Battery Backup for Outages

Built in on several LiftMaster models and available as a kit on compatible Guardian openers, so the door and the light keep working when the power does not.

Safety Sensors as Standard

Every opener we fit ships with a monitored photo-eye system, and we test the safety reverse before we leave. Cameras and automatic door locks are available where you want them.

Remotes That Work Every Time

Rolling-code and dual-burst remote technology resists code theft and radio interference, and programs to most in-car HomeLink® systems.

Installed and Serviced by Our Own Technicians

We do not subcontract. The person who fits your opener is the one who comes back if it ever needs adjusting, and we have been doing it here since 1977.

Frequently Asked Questions.

It comes down to the weight and height of the door and the space above it. A belt drive is the quiet choice for a garage under a bedroom, a chain drive suits a heavier or detached garage, and a wall mount clears the ceiling entirely for a car lift, storage or a high-lift track. We size the opener against your actual door rather than off a chart. call 905-668-4455 and we will walk through it.

Both are solid, and we install both. LiftMaster has the broader range and builds Wi-Fi and myQ® control straight into most models, which is the easier answer if you want smartphone control and camera options from day one. The Guardian 7160V is the more straightforward operator: a quiet DC motor, your choice of a chain or belt rail, and Wi-Fi you can add later through the beam® Smart Port rather than paying for it up front. Tell us what matters to you and we will point you at one.

Yes. Installation, service and repairs are all handled by Rivett technicians. We do not subcontract the work, so the person who fits your opener is the one who comes back if it ever needs adjusting.

On a LiftMaster Wi-Fi model, myQ® lets you open, close and check the door from your phone and see when it was last used. On the Guardian 7160V, the beam® Smart Port is built in, so plugging in a beam Smart Controller adds Wi-Fi and phone control without changing the opener. Either way we set it up and pair it before we leave. If you would rather keep it simple, we also fit models without it.

Every opener has an emergency release so you can operate the door by hand. Several LiftMaster models include battery backup, and compatible Guardian openers take a backup kit that keeps the door and the LED lighting working through an outage, with indicator lights showing the charge state. We will tell you at quoting stage which models include a battery and which take one as an option.

Often, yes. Broken springs, worn gears, failed safety sensors, dead remotes and misaligned tracks are all repairable, and a repair is usually the cheaper answer on a unit that is otherwise sound. We also supply and program genuine remotes, wall consoles, wireless keypads, photo eyes and door locks on site. Call 905-668-4455 (Whitby) or 613-389-5218 (Kingston). If the door will not open at all, our overhead door line runs around the clock at 905-424-2512.
