Ted Rivett and Rae Pickell founded Rivett Architectural Hardware in 1977. Ted had worked for another architectural hardware company and wanted to build one of his own. Rae came from the building supply industry, with deep relationships throughout the contractor community across Durham Region. Their families had known each other for generations, so the trust was there long before the business was. Ted brought the hardware expertise; Rae brought the contractor relationships. Together they built something that lasted.
In the early 1980s, Rivett acquired an established hardware company in Kingston and rebranded it under the Rivett name, extending the business into Eastern Ontario. What began as a small Whitby operation grew into a full-service supplier covering garage doors, commercial overhead doors, loading dock equipment, security shutters, hollow metal doors, and architectural hardware. Today the second generation of the family runs the business: Doug Pickell, Kevin Pickell, and Jeff Pickell carry forward the value Rae emphasized most: honesty.

Ted Rivett and Rae Pickell found Rivett Architectural Hardware in Whitby, Ontario, combining Ted's architectural hardware expertise with Rae's contractor relationships across Durham Region.
Rivett acquires an established hardware company in Kingston and rebrands it under the Rivett name, extending the business into Eastern Ontario.
The company expands from architectural hardware into hollow metal doors, frames, overhead doors, loading dock equipment, and security shutters, growing into a full-service supplier for commercial and institutional projects.
Doug Pickell, Kevin Pickell, and Jeff Pickell take the business into its second generation of family ownership, leading the overhead door and hardware divisions.
Rivett renovates the Whitby hardware showroom, updating it with current door and hardware product displays and literature.
Coming up on 50 years at the same Whitby location, Rivett operates three Ontario locations and two divisions, serving customers from Durham Region to Eastern Ontario, Bruce County, and Cottage Country.
